Garrow Throop
Artist Statement:
I love the balance between the reality of photography and the fantasy of painting. While photographers often strive to make their images look abstract and painters often strive to make their work look more realistic, I attempt to combine the two. It makes me question what I see and how I see it.

Artist Bio:Garrow Throop graduated from RISD and spent his career in advertising and graphic design. He started working on Madison Avenue in NYC during the “Mad Men” era and later opened a design studio in Boston. He now divides his time between Newton and Truro, Massachusetts.
Throop brings over 40 years of commercial design experience to this portfolio of mixed media images. He started by making a separate painting of his photographs then creating a hybred composite which mixes the best qualities of both media. He was invited to give a Ted Talk at Apple (Chestnut Hill) about this process and has exhibited throughout New England.
More recently Throop has completed his arc of fully morphing to only painting. While photographic references continue to be a resource, he enjoys the accidents, mistakes, successes that this fluid media creates for him.
Throop is a board member of Newton Art Association and The Truro Artists Group He is a member of PAAM in Provincetown and Galatea Fine Art Gallery in Boston. He has shown throughout Massachusetts and continues to enjoy painting, photography, design, glass blowing, fabric design and exploring other visual media.
